Pretreatment for Applied Materials Suppliers: Audit-Ready Single Step Clean and Coat

If you build frames, weldments or enclosures for Applied Materials, your pretreatment line is part of what a supplier audit looks at. Most CPR customers run a single step clean and coat, and our zirconium customers in California use it to meet the Applied Materials spec. Tell us the spec your customer requires and we'll work backward from it, with no process discharge from the wash line.

What do Applied Materials suppliers need from pretreatment?

Applied's supplier engineers audit sheet-metal suppliers' manufacturing processes, including finishing and process controls (Applied supplier engineer posting). For a powder coated part, that means a pretreatment step you can describe, repeat and document, not a solvent wipe that changes with the operator.

  • A defined process: the same clean and coat sequence on every load, at a set chemistry concentration.

  • Records: bath titration and rinse checks you can show an auditor (see our bath maintenance guide).

  • The customer's spec, not ours: CPR doesn't publish test values. Send us the spec or protocol your customer gave you, and we'll clean sample panels free so you can run your own tests.

Where are Applied Materials suppliers concentrated?

Austin is home to Applied's largest manufacturing and logistics facility (Applied Materials), and Austin-based buyers purchase for both Austin and the Santa Clara headquarters (Applied buyer posting). That puts most build-to-print sheet metal and fabrication suppliers in Central Texas and Silicon Valley, two regions with active local pretreatment programs (below).

Why do semiconductor-equipment suppliers choose zirconium?

Zirconium conversion coatings are phosphate-free and produce far less sludge than phosphate baths (Products Finishing), which suits shops that coat a mix of steel and aluminum. For a side-by-side comparison, see Iron Phosphate vs. Zirconium Pretreatment and Phosphate-Free Pretreatment for Powder Coating.

Most customers run a single step clean and coat system. Your substrates, customer requirements and internal spec determine which chemistry fits, and the equipment is set up differently for iron phosphate and zirconium. If you're moving an existing line over, read Converting an Iron Phosphate Washer to Zirconium first.

Which CPR system fits an Applied Materials supplier?

A single step, variable pressure hot water BondTite washer cleans steel and aluminum products with either an iron phosphate or zirconium coating. Run at the recommended titration, there's no rinse to add; rinse and seal coats are optional and increase performance.

How does a closed loop help with local sewer rules?

CPR Systems equipment filters and reuses the wash solution, so the pretreatment line has no process discharge. That matters most where the local program is strict:

  • San Jose and Santa Clara: the City of San José Environmental Services Department runs the pretreatment program for the San José-Santa Clara Regional Wastewater Facility on behalf of eight tributary jurisdictions, and industrial process water discharged to the sewer needs a permit (City of San José).

  • Austin: Austin Water's Industrial Waste Control program reviews pretreatment for industrial sites (Austin Water).

Confirm your own permit needs with your local program; a closed loop takes the wash line's process water out of that discussion. To see what hauling or discharge costs you today, try the savings calculator.

Do you also supply Caterpillar?

Many fabricators ship to more than one OEM. If Caterpillar is also a customer, see Pretreatment for Caterpillar Suppliers.

FAQ

Does CPR publish Applied Materials test values?

No. Specs and test methods belong to your customer. Send us the spec you're working to and we'll set up the process to meet it, and clean sample panels free so you can test them yourself.

Can one system run both iron phosphate and zirconium?

No. The equipment is set up differently for each chemistry. We'll help you choose based on your substrates, customer requirements and internal spec.

Do I need a rinse stage?

Not at the recommended titration. Rinse and seal coats are optional and increase performance when a spec calls for them.

Is CPR Systems affiliated with Applied Materials?

No. CPR Systems builds pretreatment equipment that suppliers use to meet their customers' finishing requirements.
